Is this my beginning, or is it the end?

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” –Albert Einstein

What a journey! From AI to smart cities. It is certainly a module that I can envision helping me soon, especially in these uncertain times when the world has turned to technology.

My final blog will be using the Atkins and Murphy’s (1993) cyclical model of reflection. I chose this model because I believe the five headings help to provide a detailed and thorough reflection.

Awareness

Initially, the idea of blogging and uploading my blogs for all peers to see and comment on was extremely daunting. However, after the first blog, I realised how supportive and interesting people within the module are. Also, the comments which were left put me at ease. At this point, I started to settle and enjoy the module.

The situation

The online learning with no lectures was a new prospect to me, however, I thoroughly enjoyed the process. Especially the MOOC discussions which highlighted current affairs in the digital world. Working through the MOOC at the start of the module, thoroughly prepared me for the future weekly work on the ELE. Out of all the material which I worked through on the MOOC, I found the article about the future of products such as self-reading books, the most relevant and appealing article to get involved within the discussion section.

Analysis

My initial assumption was that lectures were carried out through Skype or Microsoft teams, but I was mistaken. Every few weeks, I would attend a seminar with Lisa, where she would answer questions and give us demonstrations. I found this more useful than weekly face to face lectures. The MOOC and ELE alternative study made life flexible for my timetable.

Moreover, since COVID-19, the module was not affected because the module is based on digitalisation.

Interactions R Us

Being able to gain knowledge from fellow peers is an important aspect of this module. Having discussions and sharing ideas with peers helped me understand the topics better, also seeing so many different examples of people’s ideal field of work was intriguing. The comments which I left on blogs allowed me to further research and develop my critical thinking and analysis. Critical thinking was a previous struggle of mine, however, commenting on peer’s blog posts has helped me overcome the struggle.

Lastly, I would like to extend my gratitude to Lisa, Wendy, and Stavros for equipping me with the knowledge and the tools to be able to contribute to the ever-changing digital world.

Airbnb and its success due to its digital business model

Is this the end for traditional hotels?

Airbnb is an online platform that offers accommodation to millions of people worldwide. Airbnb is very different from your typical hotel system. Firstly, people can offer their homes/flats and even singular rooms on Airbnb. Besides, the flexibility of the Airbnb platform allows consumers to add or remove rooms and properties at their own will. Airbnb is part of the sharing economy and is also classified as a peer to peer to the company. Also, there is no third party orchestrating the deal, whereas it is between the host and the guest while Airbnb provides the online platform for this to happen.

Source: (Consent.yahoo.com, 2020)

That shows you the flexibility which Airbnb provides consumers. Airbnb is regarded as one of the most successful start-ups of the millennium (Devanur, 2019). It has over 81,000 listed cities with over 2 million people using an Airbnb on any given night (Airbnb, 2020).

What separates Airbnb from its competitors?

Airbnb is now worth $35 billion (Ghaffary, 2019). Furthermore, Airbnb acts as prime competition in the already established hotel industry, with dominant chains such as Marriott who are the largest hotel group in the world. Marriott’s shares in the room and home rental industry have been impacted so much by the success of Airbnb that they decided on setting up their home rental, which is also app-based, according to (“Airbnb Faces New Competition as Marriott Offers Home Rentals”, 2019).

However, in the discussion of how successful Airbnb can be, some have argued that Airbnb is not in fact competition to hotels, but rather an alternative. “Airbnb’s potential impacts may be dismissed because Airbnb exists parallel with, instead of in competition with, traditional accommodation” (Guttentag, 2013, p.1205)

Source:(Sorman-Nilson, 2020)

Moreover, Airbnb did not only disrupt the hotel industry, but it also disrupted the real estate industry. (Disruptive Innovation refers to a technology whose application significantly affects the way a market or industry functions (Twin, 2019). Airbnb does not own a single property; this is a big factor in which separates Airbnb from hotels.

Value proposition

  • Easy to use app
  • Ratings allow users to have a perception on where they are staying before they book
  • Insurance for property which does not live up to their reputation.

Lets get Digital!

Algorithms and Appealing to the Masses

One of the biggest contributors to Airbnb’s success is the fact that it appeals to the many rather the few. Airbnb allows the host and the traveller to adapt their experience, by customisation which is done through data collection and algorithms which provide recommendations more accurate than they have ever been.

This allows people to have refined searches provided for them without having to go via third party companies such as booking.com or Trivago. In addition, these companies give different prices for potentially same hotel room. However, Airbnb is more transparent and straight forward. Also, Consumers get frustrated when they discover that they could have paid less via a different agent.

Referral system

Airbnb has been a massive success due to other digital aspects that have been previously mentioned. However, one of the potential game-changers for the company’s business model lies within the referral aspect.

Source: Airbnb (2020)

Airbnb allows users to get a personal recommendation code. This recommendation code allows users to share their experience and get their friends involved. Also, the user who shares the code gets incentives such as money off their next booking. The link takes them straight to the Airbnb sign up page.

Trust and transparency

The case of trust in their accommodation industry is always a mixed subject. Airbnb especially relies on trust more than traditional hotels. However, Airbnb makes sure that with every host and visitor, they must verify their identification through scanning their passport and uploading a picture. This allows the host to have a better idea of who they are dealing with. Also, the review system of the website is great because you can see real-life people’s responses and interactions with the host before booking.

Airbnb encourages all communication and payments to happen via the app or the Airbnb website, whereas traditional hotels also offer phone booking which has resulted in a lot of phone scams. Therefore, the digitalisation of payment and communication has allowed Airbnb to gain success further through consumer retention.

Furthermore, Airbnb has developed and patented software which will screen potential guests/ hosts. This can alert them if the host or the guest is a threat, therefore, they can look to take action (Holmes, 2020). Moreover, this will be a future method of consumer retention due to the trust which they place in Airbnb.

How will Airbnb stay successful?

As brilliant as Airbnb’s digital business model has been in this time of a new digital age. It has still faced obstacles and has many obstacles to come in the form of regulations and laws to protect the real estate industry. Moreover, the digital business model of Airbnb has proven to be one of the success stories of modern technology and entrepreneurship.

However, Airbnb can retain its status by continuously innovation which is the key to economic growth as Schumpeter discussed in 1974. In addition, competition will be fierce with time as technology continuously to become integral in society, traditional models will adapt and develop new methods to regain their market share from Airbnb.

The evolution of football management and coaching due to the digital economy.

Cheers coach!

“The interesting thing about coaching is that you have to trouble the comfortable, and comfort the troubled.”Ric Charlesworth

Being a Professional footballer is one of the most obvious dreams of young boys and girls across the UK. I can happily say that thankfully, I reached a respectable standard of playing football and I give 80% credit to my former coach.

A picture of 17 year old me playing for former club Bowers & Pitsea FC

Parents enroll their children in teams and coaching schemes at such early ages starting from as young as 4 years of age. Only swimming surpasses football when it comes to the statistics of children ages 5-10 participating in a sport according to (“Children’s football participation in England 2010-2018 | Statista”, 2018).

The role of a Football coach has not always been the easiest or the most glamorous role. However, a good coach gets rewarded when they coach a player to the big time clubs such as Chelsea.

Celtic’s promising youngsters, Karmamoko Dembele (16) and Arsmtrong Oko-Flex (17) are among the first generation to fully benefit from the new era of digitalised coaching. Source: (Boyle, 2019)

The role of YouTube, Online Blogs and WhatsApp messenger

Not only did life become easier for coaches, but also, players like myself in the past started to understand concepts better through the YouTube videos and articles which were posted in WhatsApp group chats for specific positions.“When England advanced to the 2019 Women’s World Cup finals, Phil Neville revealed how his extensive use of WhatsApp had forged a special bond with his players” (John, 2018)

A video of myself attempting a drill after watching a YouTube video.

The use of WhatsApp messenger allows players to understand their role on the pitch and prepare for what drills to expect at training instead of being met by daunting new drills. Therefore, the training session will flow smoother.

Gone are the days of the typical whiteboard and the coaches drill book from the 1960’s, they have become items of yesterday. Due to the rise in online coaching tutorials and weekly blog articles such as Soccer coach weekly which showed examples of various drills.

The digitalisation of coaching allows players to carry on training when they leave the training facilities because they can look online and go through video demonstrations.

Heat mapping and GPS tracking

One of the biggest impacts that the digital economy has had on football management and coaching is the introduction of technology such as player heat mapping. “A player’s heat map is a 2D shaded-surface plot that represents the locations on the pitch that the player “visited” most frequently” (Moura, Santana, Vieira, Santiago & Cunha, 2015 p.228)

Player heat-map

Heat mapping and GPS has allowed football coaches at all levels to analyse the position of their player. In addition, other analytics such as where they have sprinted or walked in areas of the pitch. This development has allowed the management and coaching staff to work on individual accurate training plans. therefore, training sessions are prepared around different players and their individual requirements.

Finally, due to how available these products are becoming, sports vloggers and YouTubers are making videos to explain how these products work. An example of this is from the Four-Four two sports magazines. They wrote a blog explaining how the GPS vests will help coaches and players (“How to use a GPS vest to monitor your fitness”, 2019).

What does the future hold for football management?

The future of management and coaching is bright and according to (“21 Jobs of the Future”, 2020) coaching is one of the ‘3 C’s’ of future employment. However, some may view it as the end of an era and the start of technology takeover. This worries a lot of people, especially those in the management team who may fear that their role may be taken from them by the likes of artificial intelligence. Since entering ‘the new machine age’. The use of AI seems to be a conversation in multiple industries.

So, what next? We are already witnessing major transition in coaching, this is due to developments in technology. I believe many jobs will vanish in the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, this can be prevented if computers and humans find a way to work hand in hand to produce the best results.

In addition, former Spanish star, Esteban Granero formed an AI company called Olocip. His company aims to use AI models to help clubs:

  • prevent injury to players.
  • make better transfer decisions.
  • develop better tactics

If the company is successful, then it will not only be the sports science side of coaching who will suffer, but other specialist coaches such as talent scouts and recruitment. Although Granero stated “We are not seeking to replace people working in clubs, only help them” (Wright, 2020). After all, if I was in a management or coaching role, alarm bells would start ringing. So, my advice to all managers and people in coaching positions is – be adaptable to new technology!

Thank you, I hope you enjoyed reading my blog-post

Introduction blog

Who is Mark Afedzie-Hayford?

Hello everyone! My name is Mark Afedzie-Hayford and I am 22 years old. I am currently a MSc student studying Marketing at the University of Exeter. I studied Business Management as my undergraduate degree at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. I thoroughly enjoyed studying Business, however, I really wanted to narrow down my focus on the digital marketing side of Business.  In my personal time away from University, I play a lot of football. Football has always been a big part of my life since I was an infant. I hope I can continue to play for many more years to come! I am enjoying my time at the University of Exeter. Doing my postgraduate studies at such a University has allowed me to network and explore new potential career paths. I am looking forward to seeing what new skills this module will provide me. Thank you for reading my blog, and hope you visit my page again!
